• Student ID

All students must wear a Prairie Vista Student ID visibly around the neck on a school approved lanyard.  The first ID and lanyard are free of charge.  Students without ID must follow campus procedures for obtaining another ID.

  • Arrival & Dismissal

Each morning, students are permitted to enter the building as early as 7:51am.  All students must first go to the cafetorium.  Sixth graders may eat breakfast and then report to their hallway until 8:19am.  Seventh graders may eat breakfast and report to the 7th grade hall until 8:19. Eighth graders may eat breakfast, then report to eighth grade hall until 8:19. All student are dismissed from 8th period at 3:30pm.  Students who ride buses proceed to the covered bus area on the east side of the building.  Students waiting for parent pickup do so on the west side of the building.  Students waiting for parents should not be out by the road.

  • Tardies

Because tardiness disrupts the classroom and negatively affects the learning environment, students should arrive punctually to each of their classes. Students are allowed an adequate passing period to travel from one class to the next.

Unexcused tardies (lacking written excuse from faculty members or administrators) can affect the student’s citizenship grade and are also subject to other disciplinary consequences. Students are given one free unexcused tardy for each six-week grading period. After that, the student will be assigned to detention and/or to Saturday school.

Examples of unexcused tardies include, but are not limited to the following:

    • car trouble
    • missed bus
    • personal business
    • non-medical appointments
    • court appearances
    • weather
    • illness other than immediate family
    • oversleeping

  • Middle School Dress Code (see amendment at bottom of page)

In order to maintain an orderly environment conducive to the attainment of the educational mission and purpose of the District, all students shall be required to meet the expectations of the dress and grooming code. Dress and apparel that unduly attract the attention of other students often precipitate comments and/or other reactions that are disruptive. Safety, general health, and hygiene are factors
that are also considered in the establishment of this dress/grooming code.

    1. Student’s hair shall be neatly cut, clean, and/or combed so as to be kept out of the eyes. Odd-colored hair dyes and hairstyles or cuts that are distracting to others, shall not be permitted.
    2. Appropriate footwear must be worn.
    3. Shirts of underwear type, see-through clothing, muscle shirts, halters, and spandex clothing may not be worn. Shoulders, back, chest, and midriff must be covered and no underwear may be visible.
    4. Shorts and skirts should be no shorter than fingertip length when the arm is at the side. Biker (spandex), boxers, and wind shorts are not allowed.
    5. Clothing or possessions that promote/display inappropriate messages shall not be permitted. Apparel should not display risque prints or symbols, gang graffiti or monikers, lewd, vulgar, obscene, or suggestive language/design. Advertisements or symbols that promote or depict drugs, alcohol, tobacco products, violence, or Satanism are prohibited on all apparel, jewelry, and accessories. No chains, handcuffs or any other accessories that suggest weaponry will be allowed.
    6. Any clothing that is identified by the administration as gang-related or a safety concern will not be permitted.
    7. Pants must be worn at a natural waistline. Hats, caps, forehead bands, bandannas, sunglasses, or other head coverings and distracting accessories will not be worn in the school building.
    8. SPECIAL EXCEPTION – This code is not to be construed so as to apply to those pupils in certain elective subjects such as band, organized sports, or to students in voluntary student organizations which are called upon from time to time to represent their school at public events. Teachers and sponsors of these subjects and organizations will continue to require those standards of dress and appearance that they deem appropriate and which have served in the past to mark those school representatives with honor and distinction.
    PV amendment

At Prairie Vista MS, the following applies:

In regards to holes/frays, any hole or fraying (whether it is all the way through or not) above the fingertips (when arms are hanging in a natural position)will be a dress code violation.  Any hole beneath the fingertips must be smaller than the wearer's fist.  The only exception will be for patches that are sewn OVER the fray/hole; duct tape, ribbons, or other methods will not be accepted.

No bracelets, t-shirts, or lanyards which present the "Boobies," "Save a Breast,"  or similar slogans as determined by the administration will be permitted, whether worn backward or right side up.

Additionally, as safety concerns present themselves, adjustments to our dress code may be established.  These changes will be taught to the student body, and published to parents prior to being enforced.

All students must wear a Prairie Vista Student ID visibly around the neck on a school-approved lanyard.  The first ID and lanyard are free of charge.  Students without ID must follow campus procedures for obtaining another ID.

  • Lunch Policy

Students are not permitted to use the snack line without having a readable, unmarked barcode ID.  Students without ID will be able to go to the back of the main serving line for their lunch selections.

Students are required to have their IDs present while in the lunch lines.  This procedure is to ensure the security of lunch accounts and to prevent students from accessing another students' accounts.  To expedite the serving of lunches, students without ID will go to the end of the main lunch line.  IDs may be purchased in the library for $4.00.

All IDs have been made and distributed.  If your student has just enrolled and needs an ID, he/she must see the librarian before or after school.

  • Discipline Guidelines

Excellent instruction drives classroom management. Teachers should take the time to model what expectations they have for their students while under their instruction. The front loading of classroom rules is imperative for students to understand what is expected.

When students make poor decisions and impede the learning environment, teachers are expected to use some of the following management techniques:

    • Verbal Warning
    • Name on the board
    • Redirection
    • Change of Seat
    • Phone call home
    • Student signs a discipline book
    • Isolation in the class – followed by a mini-conference

When these intermediary steps fail to work, a referral should be generated and sent with the student to the office. After a referral is written, a mandatory phone call home or communication must be initiated with the parent of the student from the assigning teacher.  Assistant Principals are charged with contacting parents after a consequence has been issued.

Once a student has been sent to the office, the APs

will assign a consequence for the behavior. Options for the APs are Lunch Detention, SAC by the period or by the day, parent conference before returning to class, detention by arrangement with the parent, and lastly, home suspension or ADC. The district student code of conduct will be followed for disciplinary actions.

Student behavior that is threatening or that is so severe that the intermediary steps are not appropriate should be sent to the office immediately.
