Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) offers employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected absences per year. It was enacted to aid employees in balancing work and personal obligations, without having to choose between the two, in times of crisis.
An employee may be eligible for FMLA, with a qualifying event, if the employee has worked for at least 1-year with the district and has worked at least 1,250 hours from September 1st – August 31st of the preceding year. Employees can qualify for FMLA leave when they are facing personal medical problems, or to care for a family member with a serious health condition. Medical issues such as pregnancy, birth, or adoption, and fostering of a child also fall under the qualifications for FMLA. In general, if an employee has a medical situation that falls under the qualifying events, and it prevents the employee from performing his or her job for an extended period, FMLA may be an option.
Additional information about FMLA can be found in the EMS-ISD Employee Handbook and in Board policy DEC (Legal, Local) DECA (Legal).
