  • Mr. Ed Willkie (1933-2020)

Mr. Ed Willkie joined Eagle Mountain-º£½ÇÖ±²¥ ISD as a Board Member and served more than 30 years in various capacities. He felt like he did not get the best quality education as a child and wanted to make a difference. He believed all students should get equal opportunity. He was a proud supporter of EMS ISD and always believed it is a shining star in the great state of Texas.

Mr. Willkie was born on May 30, 1933, in a little farmhouse on the outskirts of Zionsville, Indiana. He was born during the great depression. Times were hard for his family and his parents struggled to make ends meet in Indiana.

In 1946, his family moved to Wisconsin, where Mr. Willkie attended school. Mr. Willkie was an athlete. He played basketball and football throughout his school years and was state recognized in both sports. His basketball team was #1 in the state for 14 consecutive weeks, and his scoring record stood for 62 years! After his all-star high school years, Ed decided to go to college.

He attended Stout University, which is a part of the University of Wisconsin, Home of the Badgers. This is where our Ed Willkie Middle School mascot gets its roots. Mr. Willkie was unable to finish college; however, he worked his way up in a magazine company to become one of the youngest Vice Presidents of a company. In 1969, he and his wife moved to Fort Worth, where he worked in the manufacturing industry then owned a candy display business until his retirement. He also served on the EMS ISD Board of Education for 30 years, serving 12 of those as Board President. He was instrumental in the strategic growth of the district as it expanded from five campuses to 23 during his Board tenure.

Mr. Willkie and his beautiful wife, Madonna, celebrated more than 60 years of marriage. They raised three children, who all attended EMS ISD schools. His oldest daughter graduated as the valedictorian of the Boswell High School class of 1974 and went on to attend Sam Houston University. They also were blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Willkie passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2020. His legacy of service and advocacy for EMS ISD and public education lives on in his challenge to the Willkie Badgers to "keep on doing a great job!" The Badger Family is truly grateful for the lasting impact that Mr. Ed Willkie made to our community, our campus, and EMS ISD.
